For more than a decade, Heinrich Boell Southern Africa has not only tackled matters related to anti-nuclear campaigning but has also made significant strides in addressing and contributing to national discourse on a just energy transition for South Africa. One of the key focuses of the Sustainable Development Programme has been to build a larger coalition of organisations mobilizing against the South African Nuclear Deal. The anti-nuclear network has indeed grown since 2015, and is also representative of non-environmental organizations. Through HBS partners Earthlife Africa (ELA), South African Faith Communities Environmental Institute (SAFCEI); the anti-nuke campaign has managed to challenge the South African government on its decision to pursue a 9.6GW nuclear procurement programme.
